What Is the Auxiliary Sail Endorsement?

The Auxiliary Sail Endorsement is an official add-on to your OUPV or Master Captain’s License that allows you to operate sail-powered vessels that also have an auxiliary engine. If you plan to carry passengers for hire on a sailboat—whether for charters, tours, or instruction—you’ll need this endorsement to stay compliant with U.S. Coast Guard regulations. Even if the vessel has a motor, if it’s primarily propelled by sail, the endorsement is required.

    How Do You Get the Sailing Endorsement?

       To add the Sail Endorsement to your current 

       license, you’ll need:

    1. Sea Service Experience
      You must document at least 180 days of service on sail- or auxiliary sail-powered vessels. These days can be part of your existing sea time if they meet the sail-specific requirement.

    2. Application Submission
      The endorsement is added through the standard USCG application process. We can help ensure your paperwork is correct, complete, and submitted on time.

    3. No Separate Exam Required
      Good news — there’s no separate written exam for the Sail Endorsement. You just need to meet the sea service requirement and submit the right documentation.
