Why Do I Need Basic Safety Training?

The STCW Basic Safety Training course is the minimum requirement for anyone who wants to work in the commercial maritime industry—including on yachts, cruise ships, and other commercial vessels.

STCW stands for Standards of Training, Certification, and Watch-keeping, established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). This training is mandated by all flag states for professional seafarers, making it an international requirement recognized across the maritime world.

Most employers require proof of this training to ensure that every crew member has the essential knowledge and hands-on skills to:

  • Maintain a safe working environment onboard

  • Respond effectively to onboard emergencies

  • Protect themselves and others in dangerous situations

Whether you're just starting your maritime career or renewing your credentials, Basic Safety Training is a critical first step to working at sea.
