1. Determine Your Upgrade Path

Upgrading a USCG license depends on your current credentials and professional goals. Common upgrade paths include:

• Increasing Gross Tonnage (e.g., 25 GRT to 50 GRT, or 50 GRT to 100 GRT)

• OUPV to Master License

• Extending Route Authority (e.g., Inland to Near Coastal)

• Adding Endorsements (e.g., Auxiliary Sail or Towing Assistance)

Each upgrade type has its own set of requirements. Be sure to verify which apply to your specific upgrade.

2. Meet the Sea Service Requirements

You must meet minimum documented sea time requirements based on the upgrade you're pursuing:

• 50 GRT Upgrade: 180 days on vessels ≥ 26 GRT

• 100 GRT Upgrade: 180 days on vessels ≥ 51 GRT

• OUPV to Master (Inland/Near Coastal): 360 days total sea time

• Master 100 to 200 GRT: 360 days on vessels ≥ 100 GRT

Use Form CG-719S to document your sea service.

3. Complete Required Training

Depending on your upgrade path, you may need:

• A USCG-approved course and exams

• STCW training, if applying for international endorsements

• Endorsement-specific training (e.g., Towing or Sailing)

• A valid CPR & First Aid certification (within 1 year)

4. Pass Required Examinations

Some upgrades require passing a USCG exam, either at a Regional Exam Center (REC) or through a USCG-approved school.

Exam topics typically include:

• Rules of the Road

• Navigation & Chart Plotting

• Deck Safety & General Vessel Knowledge

If you complete a USCG-approved course, you may be exempt from testing at an REC.

5. Complete Medical & Drug Testing Requirements

• Medical Exam: Submit Form CG-719K (unless exempt)

• Drug Testing: Pass a drug test and/or show participation in a USCG-approved random testing program

• TWIC: Provide current TWIC status or an exemption letter

6. Submit Your Application Package

Submit your completed Form CG-719B, along with all supporting documents:

• Sea Service Forms (CG-719S)

• Medical Certificate (CG-719K)

• Drug Test Results (CG-719P or equivalent)

• TWIC confirmation or exemption

• Course completion certificates (if applicable)

Don’t forget to pay the USCG evaluation and issuance fees.

7. Await USCG Review & Issuance

The USCG will review your application and notify you of any missing documents. Once approved, your upgraded captain’s license will be processed and mailed to you.
