Your License Is Within the 6-Year Grace Period
As of April 2024, the USCG extended the grace period for expired MMCs from one year to six years. If your license expired less than six years ago:
-
You can renew without retaking the full exam
-
Your license is not valid for use until it’s officially renewed
-
You still need to meet standard renewal requirements (see checklist below)
We highly recommend renewing before the 6-year deadline to avoid additional testing or training. Read More for the license renewal checklist.
Your License Is Expired Over 6 Years Ago
If your license has been expired for more than six years, the USCG treats it as a new application. You’ll need to:
-
Retake and pass the full USCG exam for your license type
-
Meet all current requirements, which may include updated training or assessments
-
Submit a full reissuance application as if applying from the beginning
We’ll walk you through each step and help you get back in good standing — quickly and stress-free.
